Fishing Technique

The choice of reed and reel for each type of fishing is complex, but when it is necessary to take into account that both must be complementary. Therefore, we will give you a series of recommendations to choose the correct reel for each case and we invite you to comment on what you use.

When deciding, we have to think about what fish we are going to look for, in what zone (what size do they reach in that place), if we are going to fish on shore or on board, in river, sea, lagoon or other area, what distances do we want Achieve, with which cane we will use it, the recovery it has, its brand (remember that cheap is expensive in the long run), the lead weight we will impose (so that it does not expire components when throwing), which thread will use And how much capacity and diameter we believe suitable for the fishing we do, the material of the reel, whether we are right-handed or left-handed (it is convenient to buy those that are for ambidextrous), among other issues. Once we have all that settled, or an idea about it, I recommend taking into account the following and the tips.

Types of reel:

Front :

Rotary :

Cylindrical :

Huevito ( low profile ) :

Fly Cast:

By technique :

BaitCast: lighter, more conical and short reeds are used and generally small rotating reels, the famous “eggs”, to throw lures of weight.

Of height: It is possible to be defined as fishing of height to all that is realized in marine waters and with boats and fishing gear appropriate to sail in the high seas. We recommend the use of rotating reels, as we drop the line and the recovery force of this reel makes it not  feel  so much the  little action  that we made with the reed.

Casting: to throw of coast in the sea. It has to have a capacity of about 300 or 400 meters of nylon 0.40, varying according to the area and size of the fish. It can be both front and rotary, but if you want to reach more distance, the first is the most recommended.

Fly cast:  Mode used to fish trout, and other species, such as goldfish. For this technique leaders and flies are used feathery, that incite the fish sought. As for the technique itself, it consists of “working” the exit of the nylon progressively and in a cyclical way, so that the flies (usually of very low weight) reach the desired distance. It is an extremely complex modality, and only with time and much practice is it perfectly mastered. With the same you can fish as much trout as goldfish, tarariras or even pejerrey, being used the reels mosqueros for the case. In the case of fly trout fishing, the most commonly used numbers range from #2 to#8.

Jigging: also called vertical fishing, basically consists of the use of leaded lures that are dropped freely to the bottom from a boat. It is used interchangeably frontally as rotating.

Spinning:  It is practiced by coast or boat. It consists in throwing artificial baits with a short reed, no more than 2,5 meters in length, with frontal or rotating reel, as desired by the fisherman, and nylon, multifilament or monofilament of small diameter. The most recommended reel for this technique is the front.

Surfcasting: Surf-casting is a form of sport fishing or hobby, consisting of fishing with fishing rod, which is done from the shore of the beach. As for some distance is important, it is advisable to use the rotating reel, although a good tuning squalor does not have much to envy.

Trolling: Unlike spinning, this mode consists of dragging a lure or ladle from a moving boat at idle, to “work” the artificial element. It is recommended to use a rotator and keep the star (brake) of the reel loose, so that when you attack the fish, do not cut the nylon.

By area:

Sea coast (varied girl-median): front reel, accompanied by cane with large, or rotary, ball-loops, with smaller ball-loops and in greater quantity, loaded with 200 to 250 meters nylon 0.30 to 0.35 mm or multifilament from 0.18 to 0.22 mm.

Sea coast (large): equipment similar to the previous one, but loaded with nylon 0.50 to 0.60 mm, increasing if you can catch a big pooch or shark to 0.80 mm even.

Marked sea (varied girl-medium): preferably medium rotating reel, loaded with 250 or 300 meters nylon 0.40 or 0.50 mm or multifilament 0.22 to 0.25 mm.

Marked sea (large variety): Large rotating with 250 or 300 meters of nylon from 0.60 to 0.70 mm, or multifilament from 0.30 to 0.35 mm. In the case of larger fish (such as shark, tuna, swordfish, etc.), nylon 1 to 1.3 mm is recommended, the reel (large) with 500 meters or more is loaded. According to bestfishingessentials, (of nylon diameter),  this equipment is adjusted to fishing to jiggings.

Coastal lagoon (small-medium fish): rotating or frontal reels, according to the taste and experience of the fisherman with them, of medium size capable of holding 150 to 200 meters of nylon 0.25 or 0.35 mm or multifilament of 0.18 to 0.22 mm.

Coastal lagoon (large fish): same as the previous case, but nylon from 0.30 to 0.40 mm or multifilament from 0.22 to 0.24 mm.

Inland lagoon (medium-large fish, usually pejerrey): front reel (micro-reel) or rotary (egg type, boy) with 100 meters nylon 0.25 to 0.35 mm or multifilament 0.14 to 0.18 mm. The advantage of the multifilament is that it floats, and as we usually fish pejerrey with line of 3 buoys, we do not need to add flotalines to the nylon if we opt for the latter. It should be clarified that it is appropriate to choose for this fishing reels boys, as well as light reeds, to avoid fatigue of the hours that we will have the equipment in hand (the same happens shipped in the river).

Coastal river (small-medium fish): frontal or rotary reel loaded with 150 to 250 meters nylon or monofilament from 0.30 to 0.40, or multifilament from 0.20 to 0.24 mm.

Coast-boarded river (large fish): idem almost anterior but with nylon or monofilament of 0.40 to 0.50 mm or multifilament of 0.24 to 0.27 mm.

In the frontals, it is advisable that the reel is wide and not very deep, thus it is obtained more distance avoiding the friction.

Choose the diameter of nylon/monofilament/multifilament that suits the size of the fish in the area and the plumb line to use (with a whip we avoid paying so much attention to this last detail), always trying to “stretch” a little Same in case it is caught some surprise but not exaggerating, since this way is lost action in some lures, distance in the throwings or capacity of load in the reels.

Look for a reel that suits your rod, so that it is better to roll and better fit together in the area / fish.

The speed of recovery is especially important when fishing with lures, especially those that are recommended to use “high speeds”.

The rotating reel is more recommended for when the fish (due to its size, weight) should be brought more with the strength of the reel and not so much with the action of the cane.

If you prefer the front reel, choose or tunee one with a casting reel.

Use a reel with a magnetic brake without a winder if you want to achieve a lot of distance.

To keep in mind: I always recommend, and recommend, ask and ask at the fishing house friend who reel you recommend for fishing you intend to do. If you do not have a trusted one or are traveling on a trip that you did not know, try not to show an absolute lack of knowledge of what you are looking for because you can take advantage of and sell them or show them what is right for them and not you. Go at least with a vague idea, and hopefully have helped it for that purpose.

Finally, it should be clear that I did not expose in the article brand or a particular reel to choose, not to make unnecessary publicity and because I believe that there are so many brands that exist, and of good quality, that this other name them. Some things that I consider should be taken into account when choosing what ever closer to the fish that I hook.
