By road: the yellow Jersey Thor Hushovd continued to sit on (Team Garmin-Cervelo) after the tough eighth stage. Everyone thought that the Norwegian would have to give up the Jersey today with the steep finale to Super-Besse Sancy.
Hushovd wanted another and looked up forces he never been near to bring out in a climb that Super-Besse Sancy.
Rui Costa (Movistar Team) won the stage after a superb solo run. He attacked from his breakaway colleagues with nine kilometers left. He was the only one to not be gathered by the defectors when guns boosted in the final Hill.
Alexandre Vinokourov (Pro Team Astana) made its own attempt to catch up with Rui Costa and with 1500 metres remaining to the destination, just when the ascent would even start, it looked as if he would Chase into Portuguese. Vinokourov who slept alone for a while and hunted could, however, not in reverse and never came up. Instead, he was collected altogether at the end of Phlippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) and other favorites who put color on completion with offensive execution.
Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard) attacked a couple of times where Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) and Andy Schleck (Team Leopard-Trek) was pasted on the ish wheels. Then countered with Philippe Gilbert a fierce attack, but it was not enough to catch up with the Portuguese who kept away with twelve seconds.
Cadel Evans rolled in third place, three seconds behind the Belgian. In the same group set Thor Hushovd very surprisingly left and defended his lead in the Tour de France. Thor became the 16th man on stage.
