Meanings of Something

In order to know the meaning of the term something, the first thing we are going to do is discover its etymological origin. In this case, it must be emphasized that this is a word that derives from Latin, more precisely from “aliquod”, which is the neutral accusative of the pronoun “aliquis, aliqua”.

It is an indefinite pronoun: a type of word that lacks grammatical definition and refers to correspondence with a certain class.

Something is used to refer to what one is not in a position to name or that one does not wish to do. For example: “I am going to eat something before resuming work”, “Excuse me, but there is something that strikes me in your story”, “I feel that I have to do something to help my father”.

If we analyze the first example, the person speaking will eat announces that “something” but does not define what. This is possibly because you have not yet chosen what your food will be. Something similar occurs in the third example: the subject is likely to want to collaborate with her father but is unable to determine how she will do so. In the second example, the speaker warns his interlocutor that “something” is strange to him, without wanting to detail what it is that generates doubts.

The pronoun of something may also refer to a certain amount that is not specified. Typically it is a small amount or a percentage of a total: “The boss gave me some money, but he has not yet completed the payment that we had agreed”, “I am going to give you something to help you cover the costs of the operation ”, “ I still can’t see the river: there is something left to arrive ”.

Something, finally, is related to what is a little or is done up to a certain level: “I’m a little tired, but I’m still going to the party”, “I speak Italian and German perfectly and also some English on Sundays “.

In the field of culture, in many cases we come across the constant use of the term that concerns us in the titles of films, books, songs… This would be the case, for example, of the famous composition of the Spanish singer Camilo Sesto “Something from my”. It is a single that was published in 1971 and which also gives the album its title.

It is considered one of the artist’s best-known songs along with others such as “To live is like this is to die of love”, “For love” or “Forgive me”.

Within the field of cinematography we find different productions that use the pronoun that concerns us in their titles:
– “Something happens with Mary”. It is a 1998 comedy directed by the Farrelly brothers and starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz. It tells the love story, over the decades, of its two protagonists.
– “Something happens in Las Vegas.” 2008 is, for its part, this comedy that tells how a man and a woman, living complicated personal moments, know each other drunk in the city of Las Vegas and end up getting married. However, when they wake up and realize what happened they will try to change things, but perhaps it is too late.
