Road: Fredrik Kessiakoff (Pro Team Astana) took his first professional victory on the road on Monday when he was driving from all its competitors up to the goal at the Kitzbüheler Horn, on the second phase of Austria around.
“It’s a dream. At the beginning of the stage, I felt not so good but the high fly to the Kitzbüheler Horn made it better. I attacked and it turned out to hold all the way to the destination, says Fredrik Kessiakoff.
When the peloton went into target upgrades, Kitzbüheler Horn, Fredrik Kessiakoff was who attacked first. He walked away solo and bought himself a good gap. Behind then came an offensive from Thomas Rohregger (Team Leopard-Trek), Leopold Konig (NetApp), Denis Menchov (Geox-TMC) and Carlos Sastre (Geox-TMC). But they did not have forces enough to run up with the Swede who kept away with 1:14 to runner-up Mauro Santambrogio (BMC Racing Team). Leopold Konig was third, beaten by a further five seconds.
Denis Menchov fell through and rolled into the goal first to 11th place, 2:59 after Fredrik Kessiakoff.
The victory means that Fredrik Kessiakoff gets to start on the third stage with the leader’s Jersey on his shoulders. He leads by 1:18 ahead of Mauro Santambrogio.
