The Camping Caravans That Brooked

Although it may seem otherwise, there are campsites that do not support caravans or motorhomes. Some for being too small, others for their poor access. This summer in Collioure (France) we came across a campsite with a lousy access point where we were from despeñarnos a ravine. This is what happened.

Collioure is a beautiful Mediterranean town in southern France. This close to the border with Girona and is a lovely place with its submerged church in the sea, its strength, its small sandy beach, marina .. A typical French village full of light and color.

Our idea was to go touring the camp sites from Colliure to the nearest towns north (Angeler Sur Mer, Elne .. etc) to find a place. In the area there are more than ten campsites both coastal and inland, so even in high season should not be difficult to find a place.

Colliure two Campsites, La Giralde and Les Amandiers, which are really small (39 and 64 plots). On their website it puts nothing that do not admit caravans.

We arrived at Colliure a sunny Friday morning and the GPS directed us to the Camping La Giralde through a poorly paved road up a hill. There were many cars and motorhomes parked and started down the road, narrowing a few meters.

A prohibited sign warning motorhomes and other slope 15 degrees were at the foot of the way down. I thought that was what was forbidden to park, as the road looked wide. There were no indicators of any camping and that made me wonder.

He was about to turn around when a young couple of Catalan tourists confirmed that under the mountain had a campsite. “We do not know if it will place” they said. “Nothing happens,” said yo.- “If there is no place prove in another.” And I continued.

Just down the first few meters, I noticed that the road was too narrow for two cars. Fortunately no one came from the front. But several cars followed me in my descent. The slopes became more pronounced, with a 180 degree bend. I started to sweat. When you double the last corner and saw the entrance to the campsite, I realized that I could not get there. More than fifteen cars parked at the entrance there was scarcely room for a car to pass. As I thought I could do, a fat man with a beard me screaming from a few meters. The signal, he said. I said I had not realized that I just wanted to turn around and get out of there.

The owner of the campground told me that if I could go down the road, at the end of the camping could turn around.Tight but I thought possible. The first problem was that I was the campground entrance slope, and I had opened me too when taking the curve. I needed to step back to enter the site, but the car did not have enough force to push the caravan backwards.

With the help of several campers and blocking the wheels of the caravan could unhook and down the hill with it and turn it to re-engage in the car. Only ever he could have with her.

The first was done. Now it was necessary to go through the road without destroying any car. Carefully and hitting a stone wall I got to spend a few centimeters from the cars. Once inside the site, they had to remove several cars to turn around on a roundabout at the end.

Everyone looked the idiot who had entered the camp with a caravan, wondering if he would get out of there.

Once again past the stretch of cars the campsite entrance, this time with more ease, I asked my wife to climb on foot with girls. I did not trust the slope, and more specifically the little engine just 90 horses of my Picasso.

The first corners were well, of course at first, but the hardest was 180 degrees with fairly steep.

In a bend the car stalled me because I tried to put second and quickly threw the handbrake because the caravan dragged me into the ditch. The Picasso could barely with his soul and even less with the trailer thousand kilos I had to drag. At that moment I was afraid that the set fell down the ravine and regretted not having bought a 4 × 4 when I had occasion.

I removed the air conditioning for all possible engine power and with the handbrake sped butt kicked. Suddenly I took the brake and the car began to rise slowly, giving off a smell of intense burning and making a terrible noise as if about to explode. Later I learned that on the climb spent a quarter of a tank. Good thing was left over from gasoline.

I finished the last turn completely drenched in sweat and parked the car between two campers. A few minutes later my wife came up with the girls up the hill. We took a hug and told me he thought he would not come out of there, at least with the caravan.

After that we went to an indoor camping in Elne. Very large and completely flat area, which we’ll discuss shortly.
