The Tent in Antiquity

Since ancient times , many civilizations have used tents for numerous purposes : to live in them, for use as achurch, as a traveling shelter in their cruises, military to their armies or to hospitals wards.

The Hebrews and Camping

The first to use the campaign tents  were the Jews who built them to live in the desert.

And Peter said to Jesus:

“Lord, how good we are here! If you want, I will set up three tents right here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

Peter’s reaction is full of excitement and joy that every Hebrew experiencing in these days of the “Feast of Tabernacles”, ie, in Hebrew, “Sukkot”.

It was the celebration called “the tents or tabernacles” in which remembered the forty years of wandering the People of God in the wilderness, living in tents and portable tabernacle worship the sign of the presence of Yahweh. Peter wants to build three tents, to thereby stop time and continue to enjoy an extraordinary experience.

The Tabernacle, moving temple of the Israelites as they traveled through the desert on their way to the Promised Land, was always the center of the camp.

Around him, the other stores were mounted in a predetermined order, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. It was, in a simple comparison, as if the tabernacle outside a temple in a central square of a small town, and groups from other stores were distributed around like little neighborhoods, according to their tribes.

Greeks and Romans

The Greeks however, preferred to huts or cabins.

That if the Romans used them as seen in the engravings of the Column of Marcus Aurelius . We’ve all seen movies like the Romans erected large military camps, where hundreds of shops “Canadian” type were distributed in rows, reserving the largest and most luxurious store for the high command.

In medieval Europe there seems to be a great use of the stores, which were usually only reserved for high military ranks, remaining soldiers in the open or in simple huts.

Proof of this is the store of Carlos V, where he took refuge on long journeys, which is superbly preserved in the Army Museum in Madrid.

East stores

Eastern civilizations for its itinerant character,  have been major drivers  of the tents .

The Berber tents and Arabic are called “tent”  or “Haima”.

Almogávares, sometimes also called pawns and field men, it was a shock troops, espionage and guerrilla present in all Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula along the Reconquista, consisting mainly of light infantry.

In the image above we can see a military camp Almogaver the thirteenth century.

In Morocco, the shop of campaign that uses the Sultan in his expeditions was called Coba (Arab Cobba, which means Dome) and used to be quite luxurious.

The supreme duty of the sultan was to defend and extend the domains of his empire and occupied it personally standing at the head of his army which forced him to go with them and efecturar itinerant life.
An example of this is in the Sultan Suleyman the front of the mighty Ottoman army. He commanded the Janissaries his famous infantry corps ys and occupied the same logistics and organization of each of their campaigns .

Sultan Suleiman said:  “If the prince is not going in person to the war and not facing the danger, you are sure that most of their business will not succeed.”

Naturally it was not in any junk shop full of mud but made her montasen one  ujosa Jaima with all the amenities which could even be compared to the luxury of his palace.

The book the Arabian Nights also referred to the tents.

“I want you to bring me a tent so light
that one man could trasportarla in the palm of your hand
and large enough to fit into it,
my court, my army and the camp”.

Sultan request of the Indian to his son Ahmed.
